Who is Christian Dior

Christian Dior was born on January 21st, 1905 in Granville - France, he was one of the greatest French designers. He founded his fashion house in December 1946 in Paris.

In 1947, he launched his first collection intended for spring/summer seasons. He revolutionized the fashion industry with his New Look and instantly witnessed great success.

In addition, the famous “New Look” was inspired by the kind feedback of Carmel Snow, Harper's Bazaar Editor-In-Chief, when she addressed Christian Dior “It's quite a revolution, dear Christian! Your dresses have such a new look” when he first launched his collection. The Bar17 suit was the key piece of the spring-summer collection of 1947.

The French stylist designed new silhouettes relying on femininity and merged historical visions into a new era of luxury. Christian went against the pre-war style and reshaped women's silhouettes, that is to say: small waist, high and round breasts, narrow shoulders and covered legs.

In 1957, Yves Saint Laurent, replaced Christian and became the creative director of Dior fashion house. Even if Saint Laurent was only 21 years old then, he maintained Christian Dior's heritage by using the same fabrics and by keeping the silhouettes similar.

Nevertheless, Saint Laurent has introduced lighter and easier to wear collections. As a result, his designs witnessed a huge success, became more daring over the years, and paradoxically harshly criticized because of his bohemian style that did not comply with the fashion house’s imprint.

In the 60’s, Marc Bohan took the reins of Dior and was known for his first collection, named “Slim Look” inspired by the modern woman such as Jackie Kennedy, amongst others.

Since 2016, Maria Grazia Chiuri is the first woman appointed as creative director of Dior. She is known for the leather handbag “Dior Book Tote”, estimated in 2020 up to 22000 euros. A real bestseller!
